Making that first call to see a therapist can be one of the hardest things to do. Counseling can help lessen depression and anxiety. It can help make sense out of awful childhood experiences. It can also make more clear if a relationship that is in trouble can be saved. The downside is that sometimes discussing sad and troubling things can seem to make the bad feelings worse, even in the end things may get better.

Psychotherapy is serious stuff. It doesn't have to be stuffy, though. I try to bring a sense of humor to my work as well as an upbeat attitude. I also strive to show respect for my clients, indicate a non-judgmental attitude, and learn from my clients as well as to offer them from my training and experience.

I have been working as a clinical psychologist for 13 years. I limit my practice to adults and teens 16 and older. Most of my work is with individuals, but I also enjoy the energy of working with couples and groups.

Technically, my work can be classified as cognitive behaviorally oriented psychotherapy. However, I use whatever techniques work for an individual. Often problems today have been in the making for some time, and frequently have their beginnings back in childhood. The therapy work may focus on "putting out fires" in the present, but looking at long-standing patterns of behavior may lead back to the past. Recognizing those patterns and developing alternatives and options can bring both behavior change and a lessening of depression and anxiety.
