When choosing which graduate programs in counseling or psychology to apply to, it is important to consider what kind of therapy they tend to promote and teach and how they approach their teaching, specifically whether the offer hands-on training that goes beyond simply seeing clients towards actual focused skill development and practice. It is also important to assess whether the culture is supportive or unnecessarily stressful, something you can often determine by speaking to current or recent students. Two additional questions to ask the admissions team: Is the school accredited, and does it guarantee practicum placements?
