How to stop mental health shame

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, highlighting that over 20% of adults experience mental illness, though only half receive treatment. The stigma surrounding mental health often prevents individuals from seeking help, despite the importance of mental well-being. Licensed therapist Jody Baumstein suggests six steps to combat this stigma: practice self-compassion, challenge unhelpful thoughts, seek support, avoid comparisons, share personal stories, and remember that experiences do not define the individual. These steps aim to foster connection and empathy, encouraging open conversations about mental health.
