Today I want to cover how to help reduce anxiety and depression. It has everything to do with your microbiome—your gut bacteria.
The largest number of nerves outside of the brain is in your gut. There is a huge communication line between your gut and your brain. What happens in the gut affects what happens in your brain.
Your gut microbes also make neurotransmitters, like GABA, dopamine, and serotonin. Serotonin can greatly affect your mood. Your gut also makes B vitamins. There is a huge connection between mood disorders and a lack of B vitamins. Also, if you have gut inflammation, that can affect your mood. So, just getting rid of inflammation can help elevate your mood.
Antidepressants can actually inhibit the growth of your friendly bacteria. There are also a lot of side effects that can accompany psychiatric drugs.
90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. SSRIs are antidepressant drugs that affect serotonin.
A few big side effects of SSRIs:
• They decrease the diversity of the microbiome
• They create an alteration in microbes
• They increase inflammation
*These side effects increase the need for SSRIs.
If you have anxiety or depression, you may want to start focusing on your gut.
Try this to help get rid of anxiety and depression:
1. Take a good probiotic
2. Consume fermented vegetables or dairy
3. Do fasting

What if, in addition to personal traumas and numerous reasons for anxiety and worry, you are also surrounded by many Arab countries that are bombing you, with constant alarms, terror attacks, and missiles…
I live in Israel, and I am constantly anxious.
While serotonin produced in the gut plays a crucial role in regulating gut function (like digestion and motility), it does not directly affect brain function due to the blood-brain barrier.
hi dr berg what kind of probiotic should i be consuming to help with anxiety?
Hey Dr Berg this is Yani_2.0 Im very greatful to have you & all of your informative knowledgeable posts/videos it means a lot ❤
Dr Berg Does antibiotics affect the brain signals becuase they say it remove microbiomes i became sleepy after taking horsepill microbiotics
Abilify sounds like a lovely medicine 😬😲
On the otherhand Bulgarian Yoghurt sounds intriguing, be interesting to know how it compares with Greek yoghurt
is it just me or does the gut look like a big brain
Serotonin produced in the intestine is not used directly in the brain because the blood-brain barrier prevents the transmission of serotonin from the circulation to the central nervous system.
Instead, serotonin gut is used to regulate digestive functions, such as:
• Bowel movement (Peristalsis): Stimulating intestinal contractions to digest food.
• Pain sensation: May play a role in digestive-related allergies.
• Communication with the intestinal nervous system: This is known as the “second brain”.
The relationship of the intestines with mood and mental health:
• The intestines and central nervous system are connected via the Gut-Brain Axis.
• The imbalance of beneficial bacteria in the gut (microbiome) may affect the production of serotonin, which is reflected in the psychological and mood.
• Some studies have suggested that improving bowel health (e.g. trans-probiotics) can improve mood and relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Yes, the intestines play a major role in serotonin production, but the effect of this serotonin on mental health is indirect and depends on the communication between the intestines and the brain. Maintaining a healthy digestive system is important to support psychological balance.
For strenght: steak and eggs
For anxiety: weed and alcohol
I haven’t yet watched the video, but here is my story and my symptoms:
At 16 I was put on the pill for managing acne and regulating hormones. By 17/18 I was on 50mg sertraline. By 19/20 it was upped to 100mg and I got off the pill. By 21/22 my acne and weight gain was so horrific. I decided I needed a change. I weaned myself off the SSRIs, cut out carbs as much as possible, fasted and exercised more regularly. I did start a course of accutane to keep some sanity and self esteem acne-wise. I lost 10kg, my hormones self regulated again and I was feeling great! Now, over a year later I’m facing other problems… I’m maintaining my weight, trying to stay active, trying to eat healthily still. But, I am extremely anxious, no appetite even while feeling hungry, I literally feel my hormones dropping and rising – it’s a nightmare. Along with the anxiety I struggle with extreme guilt and often feel self-critical and somewhat depressed. Headaches, body aches, muscle tension and anger are problems for me. Looking into my lifestyle, I don’t drink alcohol, limited caffeine, limited carbs, not a stressful job although I still feel burnt out, I’m gymming, I’m outdoors. It’s so frustrating – is it just stress or is it an underlying problem?
I have a suspicion it’s my liver or thyroid because my eyes are slightly yellow and I wake up some mornings with a slight heartburn (similar to the anxious feeling). I get nauseous quickly and my ears feel blocked. My nails aren’t strong and I bruise easily. I don’t bloat often unless I eat carbs that are store bought and processed.
I feel hopeless and it’s affecting my relationships and self confidence.
Hence the saying, “the way to a man’s brain is through his stomach…”😂😂😂
Can someone explain the fasting Dr. B is talking about? How long?, How many times a month, week?? Thank you
There IS no secret – but what helps is keeping busy: the more we sit at home the more our brain overthinks, ruminates, over-analyses and festers – and so the more depressed we get. It’s particularly tough for people who don’t have family or friends (medicos always assume people have an army of both!) because they have to become more self-reliant than ever – and I know how tough that is, trust me. So don’t mourn the past or worry about the future – put one foot in front of the other and make the most out of every day: say “good morning” to a stranger; wave at a bus driver; drop a can of dog/cat food to an animal shelter and smile though your heart may be breaking. Eventually it will heal and you’ll see sunshine again.
Going off ativan now, was on it and zoloft 25 years…this works..thank you!!!❤
What about someone with bipolar? I’ve noticed when people who are bipolar don’t eat it makes their symptoms worse. Thanks, Dr Berg!
Is it really possible to do fasting and get rid of depression, anxiety, loneliness? Maybe stop all the sugar and eat more vegetables 🥦? Also have probiotics, don’t know if that helps?
Thankyou so much I learned a lot from you
Thanks so much Dr. Berg. I am learning a lot and applying this vital information. God bless you
Insted of anxiety medicine for tenagers, what to take ?
❤ he’s the best
My two cents on Depression and Anxiety: first, I am a loving husband of over 35 yrs dealing with a spouse whom has suffered from Depression/Anxiety/Bi-polar for at least 33 years. it turns out her first symptoms started in the 3rd grade! I have been supportive and understanding listening and acting on the advice of dozens of medical professionals and Many psychiatrist through the decades. It was not until last year I realized any past treatments were just not producing positive results. Hundreds of medications later, glaucoma and hair loss, we decided to take a different path. I am NOT a medical professional so please do not take this as medical advice. We believe wholeheartedly that Depression/anxiety/bi-polar is NOT a disease but a "symptom" of something else. The drugs only treat the symptoms with massive side effects. 1. We are now under the care of a Doctor of Neuropathic Medicine NDM. 2. Detailed Blood work and detailed blood Allergy testing revealed stomach leakage as a result of a severe Wheat/Soy/Cabbage/basal allergy. 3 Her body was riddled with Yeast/Epstein Barr resulting in massive hormone imbalances and some brain swelling. Also her vitamins and mineral levels were totally off the charts "screwed up" 4. We are currently on a strict diet and supplements to restore her stomach microbiome and repair her leaky gut. 5. After just one month her taste buds began working, she can taste lemon for the first time in years, her mood is rock solid and stable, she is sleeping through the night, Constipation is completely gone. We will continue the treatment with hopes and prayers that her Glaucoma and hair loss will improve. Her DMD said he has successfully treated her type of glaucoma with diet. Patients have recovered much of their lost sight. Summary: Don't listen to MOST doctors (the ones that are not experienced in diet/stomach health) and especially psychiatrist (the ones that just push toxic pills that never order blood work). Demand they do they homework and perform MRI's/CT's on organs such as thyroid, pancreas, pituitary, Blood work, Allergy testing etc. It could be a tiny tumor or an allergy. Brain health begins and ends with diet and a healthy gut. If you are prediabetic or even worse diabetic threat that Immediately. Closing: we still have several years towards recovery but the bottom line is that she is recovering and on the correct path. In time we plan to reduce the number and quantity of medications but it will require constant effort. She has already been weened off of a highly addictive sleep narcotic after just a month. Prayers are greatly appreciated. Make the doctors do their homework. demand blood work and scans.
