Sacramento Sheriff: Mental health law is letting violent offenders walk free

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a town hall to address what officials say are serious flaws in California’s mental health diversion law. Sheriff Jim Cooper and District Attorney Thien Ho say the program is being exploited by defense attorneys and criminals to avoid jail, allowing some defendants to reoffend or erase serious charges from their records. Critics argue it’s a public safety risk, while defense attorneys say the system includes checks and judicial oversight. AB46, a proposed bill, would allow judges to consider public safety before granting diversion.

  1. Mental health is a real thing man, and I deal with PTSD & Bipolar type 2, with depressive disorder also with severe anxiety. If anything we need more programs and more government funding for mental illness because like I just stated it is a real thing 💤

  2. So these inmates are getting validated by psychiatrist if they are mentally unstable, if not they shouldn't be released unless the psychiatrist has proved they are or not
