  1. This is the right approach. I personally don't think addiction happens without some other kind of mental health issue. I know my great grandfather succumbed to alcoholism but his main problem was mood disorder. I can trace mood disorder down 4 generations of the Irish side of the family. I was also treating it with alcohol until I was diagnosed and given proper treatment. Not only could I not mix alcohol with proper treatment. I had no desire to drink or get high in anyway. I felt healthy and well for the first time in my life.
I often see the emotional liability in people and think oh yes it isn't just a desire to get high. It's a need to feel normal. Unfortunately the remedies people are most likely to head for. Only make a broken brain worse. Get the right treatment and life is a breeze. Been symptom free for nearly 20 years been sober for 30. Getting sober was easier than finding the perfect no fail treatment for my bipolar1. But it can be done. Dual diagnosis is difficult but not unsolvable. Get help wherever you can find it. Don't let a few wonky genes rob you of a healthy happy life.
