Brain-Healthy Diet? A Paradigm Shift in Treating Mental Illness

Ketogenic therapy, also known as a keto diet, may be the best dietary treatment for mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and more. But doctors aren’t taught about nutrition, and many of our understandings about what makes a healthy diet are misleading. Leading experts in metabolic psychiatry feel a shift is coming regarding how we define a brain-healthy diet.

  1. I have been depressed all of my life until age 70. I am now 78 and depression, free, and free of other issues like diabetes and hypertension. I have been carnivore for seven years and will never go back to eating this standard American diet.🙏

  2. I read the article on NPR that came out today, about the keto diet potentially improving mental health. The article was very positive and I felt uplifted about this topic getting mainstream visibility. Then I clicked through to another article on NPR, about schoolchildren who have experienced trauma participating in mindfulness exercises. The article started at the beginning of the children's school day in the cafeteria, where they were having a breakfast of "apple strudel, fruit juice, banana and milk." Yikes. Well, onwards and upwards.

  3. Wish there was as much robust evidence for a low carb diet as there is exercise for mood, anxiety and negative symptom disorders in schizophrenia spectrum. I get the buyrate, glutathione and adenosine thing but still don’t feel the diet alone is enough to treat totality of schizophrenia negative symptom issues
