Black & Ethnic Minority Mothers and Compromised Mental Health | Sandra Igwe | TEDxKingsCollegeLondon

Mental health challenges among Black and Ethnic Minority mothers are 13% higher than any other race, yet they are statistically less likely to receive diagnosis or treatment. Community groups are bridging the gap and are now apart of creating solutions. Sandra Igwe LLB MBA, is a British Social Entrepreneur, Knowledge Exchange Professional and Mother of Two. She is passionate about creating platforms, programs and tools for mothers to excel and thrive. She has worked diligently to bridge the gap between maternal health services and BAME community groups, allowing their voices to be heard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. Thank you for this truth.❤ I experienced this racism and micro aggressions years ago giving birth to my daughter. My daughter faced the same or even greater disregard giving birth to my granddaughter. I believe that this mistreatment lead to her Renal cell carcinoma diagnosis four years later. She passed at 25 and I am now raising my beautiful granddaughter who is now 16.

  2. Yes this is very true. My sister-in-law completely blamed me. She had post pardum and got over it. She didn't even listen to me. My in-laws all thought I was crazy. I ended up relasping.
