How this young leader is challenging Slovenia’s broken mental health system | Jan Peloza
In Slovenia, more than a quarter of youth have regular psycho-somatic symptoms like insomnia, irritability and nervousness. One out of five young people reports being depressed and 15.5 percent of fifteen-year-olds had suicidal thoughts in the last year. Young people’s mental health and well being requires understanding. Jan Peloza is President of Alcohol Policy Youth Network – No Excuse Slovenia. The organisation aims to bring about positive social change and personal growth of young people through training and capacity building to help treat and prevent the mental health issues faced.
Jan Peloza spoke in the Mental Health Plenary Session which addressed the question, ‘How can we halt the rise of depression and suicide among young people?’
This session took place at the 2016 One Young World Summit, the world’s premier forum for young leaders, in Ottawa, Canada. The Summit brought together 1,300 delegates from all 196 UN-recognised countries, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.
