Essentials: Psychedelics for Treating Mental Disorders | Dr. Matthew Johnson

In this Huberman Lab Essentials episode, my guest is Dr. Matthew Johnson, PhD, a senior researcher for the Center of Excellence for Psilocybin Research and Treatment at Sheppard Pratt’s Institute for Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics.

We explore the science and therapeutic potential of psychedelic medicine, including psilocybin, MDMA and LSD. We discuss how these substances can profoundly alter perception and self-identity, providing long-lasting relief from depression, addiction and trauma when used in controlled clinical settings. We also discuss microdosing and emerging research on psychedelics’ potential to support recovery from neurological injuries.

  1. Thank you for watching! If you enjoyed this topic and episode, please click the “Like” button and subscribe to our channel on YouTube. Thank you for your interest in science! — Andrew

  2. I'll leave you with this note.

I was stressed about being 35 — I don't own a home, no girlfriend, no kids, no family, not making money.

Took it and I released the things I thought I needed to feel whole and at peace.

Then I found this Bible verse, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

    — 1 Corinthians 10:31

Even the most basic or mundane actions — eating, drinking, working — can be holy and purposeful when done with the right heart.

  3. Thank, you for this great video! If you haven’t already at some point could you please do one that focuses on adderall as the topic? Thanks for all the informative, quality content.

  4. I have been having obsessive compulsion disorder(mental health issue) for 5 years from 2020.
I am taking medicine too.but the medicine for psychology problem is lifelong.I am consulting psychologist too.
But the problem still remains. Can psychological problems be solved on their own? please help and guide me. Please make a detailed vedio on OCD.

  5. Dr.Huberman can we explore how the human subconscious ocean is the best AI and its from there where we gain our insights, thanks much love.

  6. BE VERY CAREFUL if you have a dissociative disorder. You already struggle to be oriented to the present. You already do self-induced trance states. Your grip on where you are, when you are, is not solid. These drugs loosen it further. The people who administer them rarely are specialists in treating severe trauma disorders that include changes in orientation to the present and personality diffusion. BE CAREFUL.

  7. Very good but I think we can go deeper, intention is a topic that I think wasn’t really discussed which is huge.

  8. I have an un related question. My daughter is 10 and is about to have a bi lateral SCFE surgery at Lucile Packard Stanford. I know you have done a lot of research on BPC 157 and was wondering if there are any studies on this for a child’s healing process or your option on it. Thank you so much.

  9. “Give them the treatment while it still works.”There is a reason that saying exists. Psychedelics will fade away with the rest of the nonsense.

  10. Administering psychedelics to mentally ill patients is extremely risky and, in many cases, downright irresponsible. The claim that psychedelics “dissolve” trauma is little more than wishful thinking on the part of their proponents — similar illusions could just as easily be spread about alcohol. Moreover, trauma is only one of many peripheral factors in psychiatry and its significance is often overstated. Long-term research shows that in most mental disorders, the key role is played by neuroinflammation, which arises from dysregulation of the gut-brain axis. Instead of experimenting with hallucinogens, attention should be redirected toward the biological root causes.

  11. LSD is both the best and the worst drug ever xD Ive never taken it with anyone who could actually handle it. A lot different from psilocybin

  12. I want to eat mushrooms in order to finish with my anxiety and panic attacks, grow kits are legal but i dont know where to buy and how to start

  13. Off topic question but can Wim hof breathing and NSDR be used together in either order for any extra benefit compared to doing them both separately assuming the same frequency? Also would there be an ideal time for this in relation to sleep and/or exercise assuming exercise could be done either in the morning or evening? Thanks.

  14. Andrew did you see that magic mushrooms appear to extend life span and longevity in a recent study. Should do another episode on psychedelic research there making big gains in the research lately

  15. Shock therapy, psychedelics, pot – the 1950s-60s making a comeback. I know people with schizophrenia who see bodies hanging from trees, disemboweled bodies next to people's beds, command voices urging violence against others (a reason some veterans kill themselves to protect others). I cant imagine some of these people end-up on psychedelics seeking relief. Playing with fire here.

  16. There is no such thing as “bad trips” (maybe exceptions). Facing your own emotions and your stripped ego will very likely not be pleasant—just like crying at therapy is not pleasant. Psychedelics push you to face your emotions deeply. If you’re not ready for that, you might hate it.

  17. This is a great ad for never doing psychedelics. The guy's high af. Cannot even complete a sentence and answer a straightforward question. The frustration on Dr. Huberman's face has never been so apparent.

  18. Dr. Huberman, I love you but – you ask five questions, let your guests answer half a question, and then ask seven more questions!

  19. Psychedelics allow you to strip memory from perception. They can put you into a headspace where you feel you can see the world/problems with a ‘new’ perspective. If done carefully and correctly, you can solidify that new perspective after the experience, setting a new foundation for recovery moving forward

  20. I know of two people personally, who did low-dose psychedelics for PTSD treatment, and they were healed. It fixed their problem. I’m wondering if a person is diagnosed with mental health issues, such as bipolar, depression, or anxiety, if it is safe to do?

  21. Environmental settings and music choices are paramount when dealing with manic mushrooms.

All the senses matter and if you piss one of the senses off, your patient will have a bad trip.

  22. Can you do an episode on all of these trendy health/aesthetic “gadgets”? Red light therapy, microcurrents, gua sha, dry brushing, etc.

There are so many contraptions that everyone “needs” these days if they want to have the best appearance possible. Where are the actual data behind their effectiveness? Are there true health benefits? Circulation, skin radiance, etc?

I know plenty of people, women specifically, who would be really eager to listen

  23. Old school raves n ravers in the 90s were n experiment on phyidelics n human reaction to chemicals…."chem warfare" Gen X yah we were a chemical generation 💯 mass experiment!!
