‘Sopranos’ star Joe Pantoliano reveals mental health issues almost ‘destroyed’ his life

You’ve been very open about your mental health. I feel like you talked about it before it was fashionable to talk about, right? Does it feel that way? Yeah. In fact, we’ve done such a great job. I mean, our mission for the organization, no kidding, me too, was to make the discussion of mental disease cool and trendy. And we’ve succeeded. Everybody’s You can’t get them to shut up now. What what’s your diagnosis? How would you describe yourself? Uh a clinical depression, which is really a bummer cuz at least with bipolar, you got the highs. Um but uh you know, I self-medicated and really destroyed myself. The thing that I realized is that a brisk walk every day is more powerful than you know 50 milligrams of Prozac. How did you self-medicate with alcohol? Everything you know my I call it my seven deadly symptoms. Uh you know alcohol whatever was available women you know risky behavior uh act first and then ask question second. I I was a mess for a long time and it was because of adolescent childhood trauma. So with the help of a good psychiatrist and a 12step program and just practicing every day, every day um doing okay. Do you feel lucky that I mean honestly you could have gotten a if you were risking business during the 80s and 90s very easily could have gotten AIDS. Yeah. No, timing is everything and I’m I was very fortunate. My in my wife my kids were ready to throw me out. The only the only people were happy to see me weren’t people. They were my dogs. Right. My dogs actually saved my life because it was the only spark that was left in me. I was, you know, I was like Tinker Bell and the light was dying.

Joe Pantoliano confesses that his mental health struggles with clinical depression nearly “destroyed” his life and wrecked his marriage.
