In Healthwatch, many of us spend hours on social media each day, and health experts say that habit can have both positive and negative effects on our mental health. Online platforms can provide a sense of belonging, especially for those who feel isolated, have disabilities, or experience social anxiety. But doctors warn the constant comparison to polished, filtered content can damage self-esteem, and set unrealistic expectations. According to studies, those who spend a significant amount of time online above 2 hours each and every day are at risk for anxiety and depression. When you spend a great deal of time online, and that connection turns into competition or comparison, this is a significant trigger for mental health issues. If too much scrolling leaves you feeling down, experts recommend a digital detox.
