So it’s time for me to introduce the topic that we have taken up today. So the topic for today is beyond grades. That is how compassion shapes mental health in students. Well, the academic journey can be a high pressure experience when we focus on grades over well-being. But yes, compassion also plays a vital role in shaping students mental health. So let’s explore this uh what are the ways of it for the same and to dive deeper into this uh entire topic we are also joined by our esteemed experts. So let me introduce to them first. Firstly we are joined by our expert Dr. Basansi Kuruki. Ma’am is associate professor in education and head niri shellong. Ma’am namaskar and welcome to our session. Namaskar. Okay. And along with our expert, we are also joined by our practicing counselor, Miss Gracie Josson Giuliani. Ma’am, namaskar and welcome to our session. Namaskar. Okay. Thank you so much, ma’am. And dear viewers, we are also joined by our Indian sign language interpreter whose name is Sonel. So, I also welcome you to the session. And now dear viewers and our students in case if you have any queries or doubt regarding our today’s topic or program you can directly contact us via phone or our email id our phone number is flashing on your screen firstly it is800459 and second phone number of ours is 8484632 and the mail ID is sahog.nc at cit.nic.in Okay. And as you all know this session of ours is live and interactive. So you can also drop your comments, your queries or your questions in the live chat box option. And now we are starting our session. And for this session firstly I would like to ask my first question to Dr. Baseni. Ma’am as the topic already says about compassion. So what exactly this word compassion means and how practicing self-compassion helps in handling academic pressure, failure and stress. All right, thank you Shivani and a very good evening to all the viewers who are watching this uh program and also to my panelists uh Miss Gracie Zosang Leani and of course to the CIT group. Yes, this is a very actually a very important topic because now what what we are always thinking about you know grades of getting good grades. However, if we are uh we should also understand that you know what compassion is and how compassion and self-compassion can help us improve better or can make us a better human being as well as scoring those grades that we really want. So here now let us see and understand first what is compassion. Now compassion here it means you know the abil the ability to feel and understand others suffering. Not only the ability to understand and you know to to understand and feel the suffering of others but also to have that desire to help the desire to uh help and to assist either your friends or to others. So that is compassion to feel as well as to have that desire or the feeling to help them. So here it will also includes feeling of empathy, kindness, patience and also being nonjudgmental. So these are the feelings. So we should not be you know like confused between compassion and empathy. So because empathy is you can say a part of being compassion. So now let us see self-compassion. It is just that you refer back to all those feeling to yourself. Self-compassion it is treating oneself or yourself with kindness and understanding during tough times. We all face we all go across or we come across tough times and difficult times. But in in instead of criticizing or feeling low, we should trust uh we should treat oneself or we should treat ourself or yourself with kindness. And now how can practicing self-compassion helped us to you know uh overcome or to handle academic pressure to handle stress to handle failures because practicing self-compassion is you can say the most important or the most powerful psychological tools for handling academic pressure academic fail or failures stressed and because we do face or we We’ve come across all these in our lifetime. So instead of criticizing yourself harshly when uh things go wrong or when you meet with failure, we should in fact practice self-compassion which involves treating yourself with kindness, understanding and acceptance just as we accept our friends. So also we should accept accept ourself and yes academic life definitely it often demands high performances and sometime we have high expectation but when we are not able to meet those expectation when we are not able to performed as we expected then sometime we criticize ourself but this in fact it will put us down and it will not help us at all in in the long run. So practicing self-compassion helps here. It helps to reduce that fear of failure. It helps us to you know concentrate more instead of you know having that feeling or that fear of failure. We should in fact concentrate more on preparing our best or to do our best of our ability to achieve our goal to achieve our s to achieve our goal. You can say exactly and then building emotional resilience we should also and then when it comes to coping with failure failure is a you can say is a natural part of learning but many students you know they they are scared of that failure instead it is part of learning. Now students should internalize should you know self-reflect and then they should also you know begin to see failure as part of human experience not as a personal flaw but as an experience exactly right Dr. listen and you have mentioned it very clearly and we also got to know like focus on academic is crucial but yes developing compassion and empathy is equally essential for the holistic development of child or any viewers so for now I would like to ask my second question to our counselor and uh it is for Miss Gracie like how can one practice self-compassion what are its ways Uh practicing self-compassion is about being kind to yourself during tough moments just as you would support a friend. For example, after a setback of failure uh instead of criticizing ourself, we we can pause and say this is hard, this is hard for me. But every for everyone face challenges in their lifetime. We can also try being mindful, notice our feeling without judgment and remind oursel that struggle is a part of human being and uh take a small caring action like taking a break, reaching out to someone uh we trust or simply treating oursel to a comforting activity. So practicing self-compassion means treating oursel with the same kindness, understanding as or you would offer to a close friend in a difficult moment. Uh can we see the slide of methods to practice self-compassion? Exactly. So my next question is for again Dr. Basy uh ma’am how did practicing self-compassion works in the brain or hormones Dr. Vicency. Yes. Uh I think uh self-compassion or compassion it helps our brains. It helped us to you know perform better. But for this I think uh uh Miss Gracie will be able to give more insight into how you know like uh science because science has also proved that compassion it really helps you know in our journey of life. Okay. So can we have some more points or few points over this like uh how can we develop the feeling of compassion among students? So Dr. Vasency yes miss I think this will be more um suitable for Miss Gracie. Okay. So next I would like to ask Miss Gracie here like uh ma’am can you tell us how teachers and parents play vital role in fostering compassion among students miss um this uh can I save those questions to uh bas and I will uh present on the how it works on the brain and the uh and the hormones and also I will present on uh methods to practice self-compassion. Okay. Yes, Miss Gracie. Can we have few points over this? Uh when uh students are facing those difficult times, challenges and failures. So instead of berating or criticizing themselves there are some ways where we can practice uh our methods to practice our self-compassion. Uh let’s see uh in the slide methods to practice self-compassion. Um number one is notice and validate your feelings. Uh start by taking a moment notice and validate your feelings. Start by taking a moment to recognize your struggles without judging yourself. For example, after failing a test, instead of saying, “I’m so stupid. I’m not enough.” Remind yourself this is really tough and it’s normal to feel upset. This small sie lets you acknowledge your emotions, making it easier to move forward rather than getting stuck self-criticism. Number two is use kind and soothing self-t talk. When you when we get uh ourself being harsh or self-critical, replace those thoughts with general supportive words. For example, uh we can say I did my best under the circumstances. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Treat oursel as uh we would treat a good friend kindly and patiently. Number three is practice mindfulness. be present with whatever you’re feeling. Uh you may you might feel uh upset, you might feel uh anxiety, fear, failure. Instead of uh ignoring those feelings or exaggerating your emotions, try sitting quietly for a few moments, noticing feelings like stress or disappointment without judging yourself or labeling yourself as a failure. Being mindful helps you experience emotions without being overwhelmed by them. Number four is remind yourself of common humanity. This means when we are practicing self-compassion, uh remember everyone faces setbacks in their lifetime, pressures and disappointments. These experience are simply part of being human. For example, say to yourself, many students uh struggles with exam two. I am not alone in this. So realizing this help counter feelings of isolation. Number five is engage in uh self soothing activity. Allow yourself moment of nurture. This could mean taking a walk, listening to your favorite music or listening to a supportive friend after a tough day. uh give yourself permission to relax rather than forcing yourself to keep uh working without a brain. Number six is choose curiosity over blame. When you receive feedback, try to review with an open mind. Replace uh self-lame with curiosity. Ask yourself what you can learn and how you might improve next time rather than focusing on mistakes. Using these approaches not only builds resilience but also encourage a healthier more supportive relationship with ourel. So Miss Gracie as we can also see a case study on our screen regarding Priya’s journey which is mentioned as a case study. So can we have more information on this? Yes. Suppose Priya a student colleagues in felt devastated after failing an important exam criticizing herself harshly through self-compassion. She acknowledge her feelings take a break and sought help from her professor. This is a kind of how uh one should treat herself. She acknowledge she feel embarrassed at the start and start thinking she’s not good enough instead of uh criticizing herself. self criticizing Priya decides to practice self-compassion. So she acknowledge her disappointment and allow herself to feel upset. She remind herself feedback is a chance to learn. Everyone goes through this at some point and Priya takes short break to do some things she enjoys like painting, listening music, uh connecting with loved ones and friends. Later she reviews uh the feedback with curiosity rather than self-lame looking for ways to improve. By doing this Bria reduces her stress, regains her motivation and approach challenges with a healthier mindset. So practicing self-confessent means treating oursel with the same gentle past and support you could offer a good friend. It’s a mindset that not only helps you face challenges with greater calm and confidence but also build resilience and foster personal growth. Exactly. And this story gives a very powerful message to our audience. So here Miss Gracie I would also like to ask you few points the role of teachers and parents in fostering self-compassion among students or adults. So can we have some points on that? Yeah, we can give uh some uh awareness to the students about the self-compassion and also the teachings of how to practice how self-compassion and these are the part of the human being where uh where we face challenges. Um so uh we we can teach those students and parents also to support their uh their uh children when they are in uh uh upset moment or ch when they face those challenges we can support them. This is only a part uh where a human being have to face in their lifetime. Okay. So here Dr. Dr. Benzy, I would also like to ask you few points for students like uh how they can foster this feeling of compassion among themselves. Yes. In fact, I would like to continue with what Miss Gracie has said. You know when because we are all teachers now we are all teachers. So I feel that here teachers play a very important role a very important role in shaping the mind not only the mind of the student but also the hearts of the student as teacher actually we are the everyone knows that we we are the role model. So when we say role model that means teacher can demonstrate kindness teachers can practice patience or they can show patience to student because dealing with student is quite difficult. Sometime they may you know like uh come up with so many issues and uh with the student but they should always show kindness and treat student and not you know uh and not being brushed to them or being saying things which are with names and calling them names. But in fact we should also always set example for our students and also we should al create a safe environment a safe and supportive environment because this as teacher we have a lot of things to show and an important role to play for the student to or for the student to see because stu student they always you know follow or they imitate what the teachers are doing. Okay. So as teachers we should always try to celebrate because we talking about academic failures, academic pressures. So teachers should also celebrate not only result but also the efforts put by the student right ma’am and parents and teachers are the main uh role model for the students or the adults whom they follow. And here uh I would also like to add something for the conclusion right uh compassion plays a transformative role in shaping mental health in students by fostering a supportive and empathetic environment. We can also reduce stress and anxiety promote emotional resilience encourage open discussions about mental health and yes support overall well-being as Dr. Basinsi and Miss Gracie mentioned. So dear viewers as we are left with a very limited time so we have to wrap up this session for now but before that I would like to thank all our expert. So firstly I would like to thank Dr. Bessi.
