How the US healthcare system treats anxiety is SO messed 😩🇺🇸

A few years ago, I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, and I asked my doctor, “Can I get an anxiety dog?” I personally know a dog would be excellent for my mental health. But the doctor was like, “No, that’s a last resort option.” She’s like, “Before we give you a doctor’s note for a dog, you have to go through like electroshock therapy. Try all the different medications.” I think that’s that they would put me through electroshock therapy before giving me a doctor’s note for a dog. Now, I might be ignorant on the process. This was a few years ago. I didn’t ask a lot of follow-up questions, but I live in Australia now, and I was thinking about looking into it here, which it reminded me of this story.

emotional support animals should 100% be considered (esp if asked) before meds & ELECTROSHOCK THERAPY in my personal opinion

  1. Wait, why the fuck do you need a note to get a dog in the US? You do mention an 'anxiety dog' and I've never heard of an anxiety dog, and I'm sure many other people here also have no clue. There's so many options and places to get dogs in Australia, usually your biggest obstacle is here you live, especially if renting. But then, there are other animal options out there.

Incidentally, you mentioning an Anxiety Dog reminds me of horse trainers with single horses or horses that are very nervous, so they get a Shetland Pony comfort horse put into their stall/enclosure to keep them company and offset any of their anxiety issues.

  2. Being in Australia you're probably less anxious anyway. Generally Australia ranks better on the lists regarding mental health and major crime statistics.

  3. Electro-shock! Fuck that. That really is a last resort option, used in only the most difficult cases. A support dog would be a much easier option, though pricey due to the training they need.
