A career in the NHS as a psychological wellbeing practitioner

my name’s Rianna Smith I work as a psychological well-being practitioner for the improving access to psychological therapy service in South Essex as a psychological well-being practitioner most of our referrals come from GPS and other health professionals and we work with patients with mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression so the role of a psychological well-being practitioner also involves working very much alongside other healthcare professionals and mostly the patient’s GP to make sure that information is shared appropriately but also to work with other services within the mental health sector to ensure that patients are getting the right level of care and that might involve discussions around offering further therapy where necessary for those patients I would say to anybody thinking about a career in psychological therapies that it can be challenging on many different levels so every day will bring something different and you will be dealing with highly emotional situations on a in a high pressure environment but if you are able to persevere with those challenges and you’re passionate about mental health and really making a difference then I would really encourage you to pursue a career in psychological therapies if I had to describe my role in one word I would say that it is invaluable

  1. I'm thinking of changing career paths (previously teaching) and am seriously interested in becoming a PWP, but I don't have any medical/psychiatric training. I have an A Level in psychology and psychopathology, and I have a keen interest and some experience working with mental health service users. I'm wondering how much medical knowledge is required as a PWP? And is possible to become a trainee PWP without any higher educational psychology/therapy/nursing qualifications? Thanks a lot!

  2. The video was focused and spoke of the challenges for a practitioner each day will challenge my skills, however I'm determined to help people in a positive none intrusive way to gain control and manage their anxiety, helping a client/patient lead a meaningful life.
