Joseph Rock, PsyD | Cleveland Clinic Center for Behavioral Health

Well I wanted to do this since I was quite young since I was in high school at least. I liked working with people. I felt a sense of empathy for people who were suffering emotionally. I enjoyed the material when I was studying it. As I got farther on in my career I realized that I wanted to deal with people who had maybe more serious problems. It was more meaningful to me to see people who were in those kind of positions get help than just helping people out who were just having a bump here and there. I work with adults, I primarily work with people with anxiety and depression, mood disorders. I work with people who have relationship problems and people who are coping with chronic illnesses. People come in and they need coping skills to deal with anxiety or depression. We try to give them those skills and get them on and help them to function on their own as opposed to making them dependent on us for a long period of time. So if people are coming in and they want to get some help with some emotional distress they don’t have to make a commitment of two or three years. Sometimes it will be eight, ten, twelve sessions and they’re on their way and they’re feeling better. Other people, people who have chronic emotional problems, people who have chronic physical problems, we have longer term relationships with usually. For one thing people have different orientations in mental health care minus a cognitive behavioral approach which takes a look at how we perceive things affects the way we feel. Another thing about me is I’m pretty direct and pretty straightforward. A lot of people have a misconception about psychologists that either they’re going to go back and talk about their history from the time they were three-years-old or that they’re going to be all touchy feely and how did that make you feel? I’m a problem solver. I’m very direct. I want to help people learn coping skills to deal with what’s bothering them.
