The Behavioral Health Pavilion at Zucker Hillside Hospital
the estimates are the 50% of the population will at some point experience a psychiatric illness and that means that every family has been affected in some way the ultra Elijah health system is a major player in the provision of mental health services in the community the system is not only a leader in health care but it’s also made a very strong commitment to the treatment of people with mental illness and that’s not always the case it operates a large continuum of care from inpatient to parcel Hospital to continuing day treatment that effectively is stating to the patient and family who are committed to you it’s not just only about treating illness for a short period of time it’s about promoting health over the longer period of time the sucker hillside hospital is the flagship behavioral health provider for the North Shore LIJ health system over the years it’s played a tremendous role in helping to develop modern-day psychiatry Soaker hillside has the attributes of a community hospital while at the same time we have an international reputation in research and in cutting-edge clinical care one of the unique things about this institution is the close collaboration between the clinical team and the research team our patients get to have four shot at some of those research projects which might be the life-altering life-changing breakthroughs in psychiatric research we believe that the environment of care can play an important role in how patients feel there’s been a long-term goal of ours to rebuild the sucker hillside hospital building the new facility it’s a very very exciting development the behavioral health pavilion who was designed to deliver state-of-the-art advanced behavioral health care in the most serene and dignified manner we had an opportunity for the clinical staff to be involved in its design at every step the facility is extraordinary it is very welcoming it has all of the amenities that are available not only for the patient but the families as well it’s a beautiful facility that you can be proud of it’s not that scary place behind the walls and it may allow us to bring psychiatric issues out into the forefront we have open areas for activities we have beautiful dining rooms and plenty of areas for individuals to get some time for themselves it’s one of the best psychiatric facilities in the country bringing state-of-the-art tree to people with all types of mental illness at all ages the behavioral health pavilion consists of six inpatient units we have an adolescent’s unit we have two geriatric units an affective disorders unit a young adult unit and a women’s the fact that the inpatient units in this hospital are designated for specific populations enables us to focus the expertise for a particular group of patients this is a human service that we deliver and it’s important that we have the most caring and experienced and capable staff the team participates in team meetings on a daily basis we have a very interprofessional care mix on the unit so psychiatric rehab Social Work the doctors nutrition everyone works together nurses are the backbone of the hospital the most important thing in psychiatric nursing is that relationship that the nurse has with the patient they need to have the special ability to relate to that individual and I think that’s something that our nurses do extraordinarily well you cannot treat mental health services as a second tier service in a medical field attention to behavioral health is so critical not only because these illnesses are so common but they also can have a tremendous impact the outcomes of other diseases if a depressed patient not motivated to take their medications that were prescribing we’re not going to get them better on those medications so we have to work together on these issues many other health systems and hospitals have been reducing their commitment to the treatment of mental illness we have not we’re right out front and we’re showing the community that mental health is an illness like any other with this new setting we’ll be able to move forward and it will meet the needs not only the present of the future this is a place of hope our goal is not to maintain people any possible to help them to return home to their families to their communities as quickly as possible I’m very proud to be associated with an institution like was our home site hospital I’ve been here 20 years now and I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere we’re positioning ourselves the future we’re committed currently and we recognize the importance of these services if we are going to make an impact on our communities this is really gonna be a beacon for patients this will be a light in the dark and I think this is just the start for us this is just the beginning you
