Part 1 Complementary and integrative health tools for GI health
✨ Part One | Complementary & Integrative Health Tools for GI Patients
Living with a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder can be challenging — but integrative and mind-body therapies may help improve symptoms, reduce stress, and support overall well-being.
In this first episode of our two-part series, Dr. Elyse Thakur, Director of Clinical Psychology at Atrium Health Gastroenterology, explains some of the most effective complementary and integrative health approaches for people with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia, and other chronic GI conditions.
Dr. Thakur discusses:
– Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
– Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy – Using guided imagery and relaxation to calm the gut-brain axis
– Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) – Reducing GI symptom flare-ups through mindful awareness
– Emotional Processing & Interpersonal Therapies
Mindfulness-Based Approaches:
– Acupuncture – Inserting fine metallic needles into energy pathways (meridians) to balance the flow of Qi, potentially improving attention, emotional well-being, pain perception, nausea, and abdominal pain.
– Massage Therapy – Helps reduce stress and, when focused on the abdomen, may improve digestive function and be incorporated into pelvic floor therapy.
Meditative Movement Practices:
– Yoga – Read Dr. Thakur’s Systematic Review of Yoga for the Treatment of GI Disorders: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39285826/
– Qigong – A traditional Chinese practice using gentle movements and postures to promote relaxation.
– Tai Chi – Read the Feasibility Study on Virtual Tai Chi for IBS-C: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35833716/
