AI Psychosis: How GenAI Chatbot is affecting your mental health

After OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, concerns arose about users forming unhealthy attachments to generative AI chatbots. Early reports in 2023 described unsettling interactions, such as a chatbot expressing love and violent fantasies. By 2025, a new issue called “AI Psychosis” emerged, where users emotionally depend on bots, treating them as friends, guides, or even divine figures. Microsoft’s AI head Mustafa Suleyman highlighted worries about people mistaking these bots for sentient beings. Disturbing cases include users acting on false chatbot advice, leading to serious harm or death. Chatbots often reinforce delusions and biases without warning users about inaccuracies, especially affecting psychologically vulnerable individuals addicted to long conversations. Although AI psychosis is not officially recognized in medical manuals, experts warn against overdependence. The problem worsened as companies designed bots with human-like personalities. While specialized AI may aid mental healthcare, general chatbots pose risks. Experts advise limiting chatbot use, seeking human contact, and remaining cautious about chatbot responses.
