Is therapy for everyone?

Are you seeing a therapist? If not, why? Is it because you think it’s ineffective? Is it too expensive? Or is it because the very idea of mental wellness has been stigmatized? After the events of 2020, more and more of us reported feeling depressed or anxious, but plenty of people still find therapy to be out of reach. Glad You Asked host Fabiola Cineas explores why we don’t prioritize our mental health and how you can seek out the mental health care that’s right for you.

  1. Therapy is SO NOT for me! I am 25 years old I have chronic kidney disease and have had two kidney transplants, I also have an ostomy bag and am blind in one eye due to all my health issues. All that is to say that each time I seek out therapy they don’t know how to handle my health complications at all so they just try to bring up negative stuff from my past that has nothing to do with my health. There really just isn’t much help for people like me, the hospital has “spiritual advisors” but they are basically only helpful if your religious, which I’m not, so then they don’t really have much to say either.

I just stick to owning pet rats, and taking magic mushrooms once in a while to bring down my health related anxieties, seems to do the trick for me.

  2. I didn't enjoy it the first time, but I grudgingly appreciate the opportunity of having a non judgemental space to speak in.

But not close to being able to afford it.

  3. When everything comes fast, you just need to slow down and go back to nature and you will feel safe again. God has given us this gift of nature for free, let's enjoy it not destroy it.

  4. I really enjoyed this video! I’m about to finish my psych degree and I really wish these things were spoken about more in our course. You’re also a great presenter!

  5. i had really dark thoughts and was feeling very very bad at the end of 2021 and i feel like my life hasnt been joyous for years so my friends suggested it and i did one session…it was boring …reflecting or saying out loud what bothers me didnt help cause i do it all the time, writing or with friends…. so i dont think its for everyone. idk , i was feeling a bit better when i called but if i had called in the midst of my breakdown, im worried i would be feeling worse cause it didnt help

  6. Narcissists typically cannot benefit from therapy because in order to benefit from therapy, one must admit that one has a problem and needs help. A narcissist will NEVER allow themselves to be that vulnerable or honest. That is why we, as children of narcissists, need therapy to help us heal, cope, and learn how to change our behavior towards the narcissist in order to protect our mental health. My only major trauma in life is having been raised by a narcissist. She is the reason I have been in therapy for 20 years. I had zero support from anyone else as a child and for most of my adult life–except for therapy (beginning age 20); I don't know where I would be today if I didn't have therapy. I probably would not be as independent, successful, and happy as I am now. Narcissists HATE to see people happy and will do everything in their power to bring others down.

  7. I don't want to downplay the struggle to find a therapist for the specific need but the given number of white psychologist from 2015 with 86% is misleadingly depicted. The number is including everyone who identified as white not reffering to being European decent. In that year statistically 76% of the population was white in the meaning of having a central European background. Similar studies showed that in 2015 76% of psychologist were white with the same meaning of the census. There are so many shocking statistics out there. But I hope that you are not shocked that America is very white in the numbers. Not every statistic is news worthy so I hope you will choose numbers that are portrayed in a usable context.

  8. Clinical psychologist here. Therapy is not for everyone. Too much therapy can also be damaging and create an overreliance on a medical provider for guidance and erode ones resilience. For most, therapy should be short term and utilized when a person is struggling to work through issues using their own problem-solving techniques.

There is a such thing as "overdosing" on therapy, which can be harmful to clients. Research has been done on the sweet spot for number of therapy hours needed to achieve maximum wellness. Beyond that and resilience declines, anxiety and depression increase.

Finally, overloading the mental health system with people who are relatively healthy and functional creates an access issue for those who need it.

  10. I would’ve loved to have seen more from that interview with the wheelchair user! As a wheelchair user myself, I find many abled therapists just say platitudes about “recalibrating your relationship with your body” that… just don’t work when you have constant chronic pain and constantly run into businesses with no wheelchair entrance.

The equine therapy was really interesting though, I didn’t know stuff like that existed. I thought farms like that were just for days out for schoolkids, not a potential avenue of therapy. Very interesting.

  11. Even though I have awarded that therapy and how important mental health is, the budget is not enough to afford it in Taiwan neither 😢

Furthermore, many people said it takes many times to try to find out who or which is the most suitable way for individuals so the cost simply multiplied.

I did try free therapies before but they were handled by volunteers whose experts weren’t therapist so it turned out to be similar to chitchat with an older sister 😂

  12. I have a plethora of chronic mental illnesses stemming from developmental trauma; because of this, I have had multiple therapists and psychologists in my life so far. Through therapy I have learned copious skills and would not be able to function normally without the guidance of professionals.
The process of going through therapy itself is extremely hit or miss–akin to trying different outfits or medications–and can fluctuate largely on the diagnosis, individual, circumstance, and provider. Ironically, i've had a lot of traumatic instances that have unwieldy been derived from poor therapy that still impacts me today. Overall, i am optimistic that therapy will be less stigmatized with time and advocate extensively for it, especially in terms of medical coverage and public access regardless of location.
Take care of yourself, and best of luck to you.

  13. I am not white. I completely understand how it can feel to see a number like 86% of therapists are white. 75% of the United States is white. Also it costs money that some minorities may not have access to to become a therapist. Just remember when you see big scary statistics about the number of white people that 75% of the group this portion is sampling from is white.

  14. I've gone to therapy sessions several times, and honestly, I've gotten nothing from them. It felt good talking but I've talked to strangers and had the same feelings. I don't believe therapy works
