Behind the Crisis: law enforcement’s approach to Mid-Missouri’s homeless population

Law enforcement in Mid-Missouri have dedicated resources and officers to address the homelessness crisis.

Jefferson City Police Officer Martika Hitt and the Crisis Intervention Team believe in taking the time to listen.

KRCG 13 rode with Hitt and observed as she introduced herself to unhoused individuals on the street. She checked in on them and asked if they were interested in any services.

Previously, Hitt worked in the behavioral health field. She said she saw unsheltered individuals frequently coming in contact with law enforcement and decided to make a change.
