*About Emma* Just after she graduated from university, Emma Bennett slipped on a spill in the stairwell, hitting the back of her head on each concrete step down two flights, resulting in a diffuse axonal brain injury. She has also had a near-death experience, forever altering her life in unimaginable ways. In addition to acquired disability, Emma has cervical dystonia, a congenital and rare neurological condition similar to Parkinson’s that affects the basal ganglia, causing involuntary muscle contractions in her cervical spine area. To adapt to life with these conditions, Emma has leveraged conscious adaptation to heal through neurohacking and used her intuition to offset cognitive impairments, changing her approach to consciousness, life, and the human experience. Now, Emma writes, speaks, and teaches on how to leverage the hidden powers of the remarkable brain, nervous system, body, and spirit. Your support enables a content creator with disabilities to succeed and thrive. Thank you for advocating for the success and wellbeing of people with disabilities.

*MAHALO, THANK YOU*
When I record videos, read tarot, or do public speaking, words flow through me spontaneously, and I don’t always know what will come out until afterward. I often feel that these insights would have greatly benefited me five, seven, or ten years ago. I hope that by sharing these insights, they can be a blessing to others and help them on their journeys.

A note, I grew up on the North Shore of Oahu and continue to learn from spiritual teachers of Hawai’i.

  1. When you're feeling overwhelmed, tired, or generally craptastic, it affects your self-perception in several ways, both neurologically and psychologically.

    Neurological factors:

Brain fog and fatigue: Lack of sleep or illness can cause brain fog, which impairs cognitive function. This happens when the brain struggles to maintain its usual efficiency, often due to inflammation, stress, or hormonal imbalances. Fatigue makes it harder for the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and self-regulation—to function properly, leading to distorted self-perception.

Neurotransmitter imbalance: When you're tired or unwell, neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine can become imbalanced. Low serotonin levels, for example, are linked to mood disturbances and poor self-esteem. Dopamine, which regulates motivation and reward, may be reduced, making you feel less driven or worthy.

Stress hormones: Physical illness or fatigue can trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol. High levels of cortisol over time can negatively impact the hippocampus, the brain region involved in memory and emotional regulation, leading to feelings of irritability, depression, and poor self-worth.

    Psychological factors:

Negative self-assessment: When you're feeling unwell, you may be more prone to negative self-talk or magnifying your weaknesses. This is partly because your cognitive resources are depleted, making it harder to regulate emotions or maintain a balanced perspective on yourself.

Mood disturbances: Fatigue and illness often lead to a dip in mood, which can trigger negative thought patterns. You might feel frustrated with your body for not performing optimally, leading to feelings of inadequacy or low self-esteem.

Reduced resilience: When you’re physically or mentally depleted, it’s harder to bounce back from challenges or disappointments. This lower resilience can make you more susceptible to self-criticism or distorted thinking about your abilities and worth.
