The prevalence and recognition of mental and behavioral health disorders has increased significantly over the past fifty years. At Brigham and Women’s Hospital, research is conducted across a broad number of areas, including women’s mental health (and the mechanisms and treatment of menopausal symptoms) to the basic science of psychiatric diseases.
David Silbersweig, MD, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Institute for the Neurosciences, Hadine Joffe, MD, Vice Chair for Research, Department of Psychiatry and David Ahern, PhD, Director of the Program in Behavioral Informatics and eHealth, Department of Psychiatry discuss their research on mental and behavioral health at Discover Brigham. They are joined by Martie Carnie, the Co-chair of Brigham & Women’s Patient Family Centered Care Advisory Council.
Dr. Silbersweig, MD is using functional neuroimaging to improve our understanding of psychiatric illness.
Dr. Joffe is studying the causes of sleep disturbance and depression during the menopause transition, particularly the role of estradiol and the contribution of hot flashes, as well as the best approaches to treating these menopause-related symptoms.
Dr. Ahern is studying technology-enabled interventions for mental health disorders.
Ms. Carnie discusses her role in promoting the voices of patients and families as partners of the health care team in clinical inpatient and outpatient settings, research, and patient education..
