Ask the Expert: How parents can get involved in their children’s therapy
One in five children ages 3 to 17 in the United States experience a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder, according to the National Library of Medicine. Therapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), play therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) offer effective, evidence-based treatments for helping support these children.
However, parents and caregivers may still struggle with knowing their place in their child’s treatment plan. They may ask themselves if they should be actively present at therapy sessions or talk with their child’s clinician separately.
Jacquelynne Charity, director of outpatient and substance use disorder services at Kennebec Behavioral Health, explains the importance of parents and caregivers becoming involved in their child’s therapy or trauma treatment.
