UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH), a national research center housed within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), will present a webinar titled “Accountable Innovation: AI and Mental Healthcare” from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Presented by Henry Xiao, assistant director of operations at CAPS, the webinar will establish a baseline understanding of foundational artificial intelligence concepts within mental health care and address a range of ethical considerations and misunderstandings around its functionality. Xiao, a licensed clinical psychologist at CAPS, has worked with CCMH for over a decade and has established his career integrating science and practice, with a particular focus on the intersection of technology and mental health care.

This free webinar is specifically designed for mental health care providers and professionals within higher education who work with college students. Information about registering for the webinar can be found online.

CCMH provides numerous national webinars on critical collegiate mental health topics to the global community of helping professionals within higher education, highlighting important research findings from CCMH and implications for helping college students.

“The goal of this webinar is to promote AI literacy, increase understanding of the uses and misuses of AI, and generate productive discussions between professionals and college students about the helpful components of AI with their mental health needs,” said CCMH executive director Brett Scofield.

Recent surveys indicate widespread AI adoption among young adults: 52% of teens aged 13-17 use AI monthly or weekly for social companionship, while 42% and 30% of university students and instructors use AI at least weekly. Preliminary data from college counseling centers indicate that a noteworthy portion of students entering services are using AI for socioemotional support.
