MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/CNN NEWSOURCE/WKRC) – As the holiday season approaches, many are already decking the halls, and experts suggest this early decorating trend could be beneficial for mental health.

A survey revealed that 30% of people are in full Christmas mode before Dec. 1, and 60% of adults believe holiday celebrations start earlier now than in their childhood.

Licensed psychotherapist Amy Morin explained, “There is research too that decorating can help us with collective anxiety.” Morin, who wrote an article for Psychology Today, emphasized that seeing neighbors decorate fosters a sense of community and reduces collective anxiety.

The trend gained momentum during the pandemic, as people sought to connect and uplift spirits during isolation. Morin added, “It helps you to become more social, which brings us back to this idea that the more social you are, the happier you are.” She encourages embracing the festive spirit, saying, “There’s no reason that you shouldn’t decorate.”
