tips from the ER 72-hour involuntary hold in California we call it a 5150 and that is an official psychiatric hold that says you are not allowed to go anywhere for the next 72 hours and this hold is put in place if you are a danger to yourself or others not just SI thoughts if you’re having hi thoughts here’s Johnny a 72-hour hold can be put on You by police officers psych doctors or the ER any one of these guys can put you on a 5150 hold during that time you will get psychiatric help and we will be evaluating you all throughout the day to make sure that you don’t K yourself I don’t know how else to say it if you are safe to go home they will send you home with follow-up resources if they think it is better for you to stay you will now be put on a 14-day hold in California that is called a 5250 and you will stay for a little longer to make sure you are safe ain’t that right yeah I hope you don’t kill yourself there’s a trick actually I don’t know if we should put this in there but if you come in without hurting yourself and you have a plan we take that much more seriously and you will definitely never leave [Music]
If you’re a danger to yourself or others, the ER may invoke a 72-hour involuntary hold to make sure you’re safe.

So if you wanna kys, tell NOONE. Otherwise you'll probably spend the rest of your days locked up in a psych ward. What a way to encourage people to ask for help!… "You think you have it bad? Just wait until we're done with you. And we'll call it help. Yahooo!!!"… "You wanna die? No no no. We're gonna keep you alive if you like it or not. And shove pills down your throat until what you want is the same as what we want" That's fucked up…
I know you cansor word "kill" because YouTube algorithm is a bitch, but it took me a second to understand why would you want to prevent people from going to fuck themselves
In Colorado, it’s usually 36 hour hold, unless you have a plan to hurt others.
It’s called a “triage unit”instead of going to ICU
There are also “bequest flyers” especially if they constantly arrive high or it’s suspected malingering.
If someone continues to be unstable, they transfer them in a locked unit.
When I lived in Colorado, I was a substitute abuse counselor for teens.
This summer i literally was thinking about ways to end my life cause i was stressed and worried about too many things after i lost my job and my b/f wouldn't even leave my side the entire time. his stubbornness actually kept me from doing anything and i'm doing much better mentally. still with out a job but handling things much better.
I want to go to the er for a psych hold but I can’t. I’ve got 2 kids and it would be too much on my wife and also one or both of us would lose our jobs. I’m not medicated so I shall just chill here by a thread.
Had to do this to a friend when I came home for Christmas two years ago. Don’t trust the ‘can’t I just wait to go in until x number of days?’ Bring them right away. My friend ended up staying for 2 weeks, and is still alive due to continuing treatment started during their hospitalization. Sure a psych hold seems scary, but what’s even scarier is a world without you in it.
Look up how insurance fraud those hospitals do a year it’s alarming
🙂 never again. will proceed to lie to my psychologists. thanks, california! you made my mental health a million times worse!
BASICALLY WHAT WE CALL PC-10 IN GALLUP NM AKA G-TOWN NM AKA NAVAJO NATION REPRESENT
OR SHOULD I SAY GLONIE TOWN NM
Lol my psychiatrist saw me 1 time and told me I had PTSD and prescribed me a benzodiazepine and told me it was not addictive and had no side effects and I had to keep taking it an entire time and I took that shit 2 times and it almost killed me.
As someone who has attempted before I promise you, if you have to take a friend or loved one to get this kind of help you're doing them a favor. It's very hard to get better without resources. Even if they're upset in the moment, know that you are doing them a favor.
Can we get one of those indefinite ones the next time the pres or vp come to CA?
Being forced into a place for potentially weeks is really scary to me, and I actually stopped seeing a therapist once because they screamed at me for saying that being stuck there would make me more likely to commit suicide after. I’ve dealt with ideation and thoughts my entire life but only attempted once a while ago.
I put my forever best friend on a 72-hour hold and she was there for almost three weeks…
Ah the good old homicidal ideations feeling like you won't just hurt yourself or others the wanting or knowing that you will hurt others if you don't get help
Not Punishment. 🙄 Amazing what people will believe, so sad and disappointing.
Van Halen named their album 5150 after the code. Later David Lee Roth worked as a paramedic.
In Oregon it’s called a “Notice of Mental Illness” or NMI. It’s five business days in Oregon which is bonkers. Normally that’s used because our EDs are all full as are our psych facilities. More or less the NMI holds you in the ED until you can get transferred to inpatient psych. During your five business days (yeah, holidays and weekends don’t count, we get a fair whack of Californians who tell us it’s illegal because it’s only 72 hours and don’t realize it’s different here) a county investigator will come and talk to you as well as the doctor and social worker, the investigator decides if it stands, is dropped, or if it’s extended. I work hospital security and the ED is where I spend most of my time. In my hospital system we’re clinical for security so we spend a large amount of time helping our all over with security and behavioral health issues. Many of us are certified EMTs or Crisis Responders as well
Yeah I was put on one of these holds. Only for the psych to ultimately determine I probably shouldn't have been held in the first place. Nearly lost my job over it. Which is you know great for mental health. Easily the most traumatic and dehumanizing event I have gone through in my life. It doesn't help people.
I've been on a hold before. It very much so felt like a punishment. I now understand that they were trying to help, but at the time, I was just so angry, and I didn't want to listen to anyone
Thankfully, I'm a wing it kinda man, and not a planner
"not just SI thoughts, if you're having HI thoughts 🙂"
i successfully convinced my therapist away from calling EMS on me by telling her that i need to be able to go to work or i won't make rent. this is not advice.
In Iceland we have the typical 72 hours but 21 days after that (just got out last month..) but hey atleast i am wayyy better now♡.
Nowadays they so full it has to both, just being a mega risk to urself ain't shit, sent home in a few hours to clean the bloody puddle since you stitched now
I told my therapist I had thoughts of ending it, and why. She didn't flinch or anything. She asked if there was someone I trusted more than anybody else, ourside of her. She asked permission to call that person. She told them "I have your bestie here, she needs someone to take her to the er and someone to take her service dog for awhile while she gets help. Would you be willing to help in either capacity?" And those two powerful women got me to the hospital where I was on involuntary until they figured out my brain doesn't make serotonin anymore and got me a good mix of medicine that helps. Emergency psych holds save lives. It's not a good time, but it's lifesaving.
