SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — An Uber driver was accused of raping a passenger on their way to the Huntsman Mental Health Institute.

Julio Arroyo Mendoza, 34, was arrested on suspicion of rape, a first-degree felony.

On Monday, a detective with the University of Utah Police Department said he was assigned to investigate a rape that reportedly happened en route to the mental health institute.

The affidavit states that Mendoza, an Uber driver, stopped the vehicle, got into the back seat, began telling the passenger that he loved her, and assaulted her.

The passenger told officers she managed to exit the vehicle. She said that a friend picked her up and drove her to the institute, where she reported the assault.

The arresting officer requested Mendoza be held without bail, as “during the investigation he stated that his plans were to return to Peru where he is from,” the affidavit states.

Mendoza was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
