ROLETTE, N.D. (KMOT) – State health officials say one out of every four adults in North Dakota received mental health services last year. But care is not always accessible.
There’s a new option for behavioral health services in Rolette, thanks to Jazlyn Bates.
She’s the first-ever psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at the Northland Health Clinic.
“They have not had a mental health provider here at the Rolette location since they opened in 2003,” said Bates.
Bates is from the area and said it means a lot to come back after her schooling to offer vital mental health resources.
“People in rural communities and farmers are at a higher risk of suicide, unfortunately, so providing those services in person is so important,” said Bates.
She explained that the clinic previously offered telehealth options through providers in Turtle Lake and Minot.
Team member Brenden Bergquist said Northland aims to provide affordable care close to home at its eight different locations.
He said Bates is helping make that a reality.
“It’s an option that they don’t have to go hours and hours to see someone,” said Bergquist.
Northland offers medical, dental and behavioral health services.
However, Bergquist said only three locations, including Rolette, offer all three.
“It really opens up the door to providing more services and getting more reach out into our communities,” said Bergquist.
Bates typically holds 90-minute sessions with clients that involve medical history review, patient conversation, medicine management and more.
She said the frequency of visits with patients depends on needs.
Bates said she hopes to expand her clientele to younger kids down the road.
