Tips for Caregivers: Managing Stress

If you’re a caregiver, I want you to remind
yourself: it’s important to take care of you. Hi, I’m WenDee, a behavioral health
specialist here at Oak Street Health. Caring for someone else while
managing your own life is a big job. It can lead to burnout if you’re
not careful, so it’s important to keep those boundaries and practice self-care.
Start with the basics: get enough sleep, eat balanced meals, and create
short breaks throughout the day. Make sure you have a strong support
system. Opening up to friends, family, or a professional reminds you that you’re not alone.
Setting boundaries doesn’t need to feel hard. It could be asking a family member to help with
something you usually do, so you can take a moment to rest. It’s not selfish. It helps you
keep showing up and doing your best every day. Like they say on airplanes: you have to put
your own mask on first before helping others. Visit OakStreetHealth.com
