A Co Cavan man says the system is broken when it comes to dealing with people with mental health issues.

Connor Kelly said while the employees within the health sector go above and beyond, the system itself is the problem. He says the people that make up the government need to take a good long look at themselves when it comes to what is offered to people who are suffering with their mental health.

Connor himself has had issues with dealing with his own mental health and has used the services available to him in Cavan over the years.

He said only a few weeks ago he went to the hospital and after a number of hours he was told to go home and look after his own mental health. The Co Cavan man is currently competing in a cold swim each day in November in an effort to raise awareness and funds for SOSAD Cavan.

Connor says the HSE needs to resource mental health supports much better, adding that the system was clogged up due to the demand on the services being offered.

Meanwhile, Connor says reaching out to people close to him has been and continues to be important in helping him deal with his struggles.
