Rural Minds Focus’ on Rural Mental Health

Jeff Winton, founder and chairman of Rural Minds, shares more about the organization and the mission behind its work.

“Rural Minds is a four-year-old organization that is a result of a family tragedy that took place in my dairy farming family. When my nephew Brooks died near our family farm by suicide, it became very apparent that we weren’t doing nearly enough for people struggling with mental illness in this country, especially in rural areas. So we are the only national nonprofit organization that is focused solely on mental health equity for the 46 million people that live in rural America.”

Winton explains how he’s working to bring these issues to the forefront in news and in media conversations.

“Because we’re focused on the implications of mental health that that is primarily the message that we’re delivering, both in Washington at state levels, community levels.:

Additionally, Winton says rural minds works with international partners who closely follow US agriculture as what happens here directly affects other nations’ food and fiber supply. For more information on the organization, go to ruralminds.org. I’m Lorrie Boyer for the Ag Information Network.
