Government review into mental health services

Health Secretary Wes Streeting is launching an independent review into the rising demand for mental health ADHD and autism services in England. It’ll look at whether there’s evidence of overdiagnosis and investigate gaps in support. Around 1.3 million people claim disability benefits primarily for mental health or behavioral conditions. Some 40 4% of all disability claimments. There are families battling to get a diagnosis, battling to get that support. And it shouldn’t work that way. Families should get support early on. Teachers and professionals should be able to look at the situation for a kid and say, “Actually, if we put this support in early, we might avoid the need for stuff to escalate.

  1. I dont know if they are having this on their mind. I have personally met a few people from ND network that are truly disturbing. On the other hands, I have never had the medical insurance to get a diagnosis myself (27 Female with Chinese background)

  2. I’m 39 still trying to get a diagnosis and biggest issue is having anxiety and diazepam – I’m on the total opposite medicine that I need

I literally functioned properly once in my life and it’s when someone spiked me – I need the up not the down to calm my brain – I literally did everything I’d put off doing in one day arranged my whole life in a day then the next day I couldn’t even think straight

It’s literally ruined my whole life having adhd with no help and I struggled all the way through highscool because of this I’ve only just found my career and did it on my own this late in life

Meaning I never had children and didn’t settle down because I can’t raise a child h til my mind is more stable and I feel I’m too chaotic

I’m literally not gonna have kids until I can get help

  3. I don’t think ADHD exists as something to be meditated. I think capitalism and work needs everyone to be circles. People with adhd are squares. The school system is trained to make circles and when they have squares they can’t force and break into the system, they medicate you and tell you, you have a condition. It’s just a different programming of the brain. Nothing wrong with it!

  4. Need quicker and easier referrals and actual therapy not just medication so ppl can get back up being productive citizen and THAT will plug the productivity gap and the treasury blackhole.

  5. There is a big difference between being charmingly forgetful and having clinically significant ADHD. No one wants to say it but there’s a huge case for over-diagnosis in this country and abroad. My ADHD affects all areas of my life- I can’t work, I can’t maintain friendships and I’m in recovery from substance misuse that was in part caused by untreated ADHD. I’m also autistic. There’s a terrible gap in services for neurodivergent people in general. I do hope Streeting does something to address this. A 4 year wait for an autism diagnosis is shocking.

  6. Yes the ammount of money the government will save by catching out people who pretend to have autism adhd and the big one depression will cover that black hole in 2-3 years it costs us billions

  7. People wouldn't be so depressed if they had a future to look forward too. Sadly no one in my generation can afford to move out. Renting is the same price that a mortgage cost used to be. Food is expensive, bills are expensive, work is incredibly hard to find, plus scummy bossed forcing 0 hours contracts. It shouldn't be legal.

  8. Mental health is real, talking about over diagnosing, there sabatours in everything, news, hospitals, Government and it's all people who aren't from here isn't that weird dye reckon anyone higher up is ever going to get onto this

  9. It is interesting that despite our labour government being supposedly left and the American government being supposedly right they both target the same groups relentlessly.

  10. Everyone knows it’s a swizzle !One child gets labelled ADHD and tells the other mothers what to say to the doctor. The doctor cannot be sure in ten mins about the truth of the claims, so signs a piece of paper. And so it goes on. BUT ,this piece of paper ,means that the parent can claim to be a carer and double or triple her family allowances! It is daylight robbery! These children are dying of boredom ! Plonked in front of tv.s for hours at a time instead of playing outside with friends! LAZY ,GREEDY PARENTING IS THE CAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS !

  11. i feel like most people have ADHD when i was at school there was like 4-5 diagnosed because they were disruptive and couldn't sit still and there were others like myself who just didnt get anything i wasn't interested in, my mind literally wouldnt process it.. but yet i run 3 businesses so you give me something i know about or give ashit about and i'll excel. im sure if i was tested they'd say i have ADHD but its not affecting my life.. issue is the majority are overworked and underappreciated and theres always something else to worry about.. even if you've got a few quid..the brown letters still come through the door.. " you owe X pay or you lose Y "

  12. Can this left government ever stop being so right wing? The reason I left the Labour party is that it is just like Reform. Blame the ill for being ill rather than finding the causes is typical right wing stuff. I give up on them.

  13. Sure there are people out there who need special attention, my brother was one, but I know people on disability benefits for mental health issues who get more money for doing nothing than finding their own way through life. The welfare state traps them and debilitates them.

  14. Yes it is over-diagnosed, but it is also under-diagnosed at the same time. Just the wrong people getting the wrong diagnosis due to stressed workers from a lack of funding in the sector.

  15. It was hard to find out what was wrong with my children when they were young and yes both diagnosed with ADHD and as they get older develop other mental health issues, today there are long lists teachers not trained enough to spot signs of ADHD which leaves the child suffering as well as parents,

  16. Politicians like to throw big numbers around to make things sound bad and they know hardly anyone will do the maths. So:

    1. Estimated UK population (from the Office of National Statistics): 69.5 million.
    2. People on a disability benefit for mental health: 1.3 million.

That's 1.87% of the entire population.

That includes children and pensioners, not just people of working age. Plus, the common assumption is that these people are claiming permanently. How many of them just need a couple of months to get better?

Don't let any politicians manipulate you into blaming tiny groups of people for their own gain. Question what they tell you and why.
