CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As many as nine in 10 people experience holiday-related stress, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association.
Dr. Charles Roberts, senior vice president of clinical care at Mindfully, explained that many people unknowingly struggle with seasonal depression, which manifests as a low mood and activity level. “There’s this thing called seasonal depression that a lot of people are struggling with and they don’t realize it,” Roberts said. He suggested that increasing activity and social interaction can help improve mood.

Rick Chouteau, a participant in a hybrid fitness class at MyFitness Suites, shared that the class has positively impacted his mood this holiday season. “The energy that you get from the class is second to none,” Chouteau said.
Roberts also emphasized the importance of diet, sunlight, and activity level in managing mood. “When you start to feel that slide… it’s a good time to check in,” he said, recommending early intervention.
For those feeling overwhelmed, the 988 hotline offers resources and support. Despite the stress, the survey found that seven in 10 people believe the holiday stress is worth it for the sense of togetherness it brings.
