FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Whether it’s healthier eating, getting more exercise, freshening up our finances or creating connections, those are some resolutions that will be at the top of people’s New Year’s resolutions list.

While our New Year’s goals can focus on our physical health, Coraline Robinson with Balance Treatment Center says it’s important to zone in on our mental and emotional well-being.

“Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD have to do with an imbalance, both in the neurochemistry and in your nervous system,” she said. “The best way to really set yourself up for success is to take the middle path.”

A new year can mean a fresh start, but it can be overwhelming on where to begin.

That’s why Robinson says it’s important to make your goals realistic.

“Are you going to go for changing your physical to change your mood? Or maybe you’re going to start with changing your isolation through social connection to change your mood. You have that choice,” she said.

Our physical health is tied to our mental state.

That’s why it’s okay to take small steps to achieve our goals.

“In fact that that’s what the research shows is that intense extremes are not sustainable,” Robinson said. “You do it gradually, and that’s going to be sustainable over time.”

If you slip up, Robinson says that’s okay and to give yourself some grace.

“You’re human,” Robinson said. “You’re imperfect. We all are. Nobody is perfect in this world.”

By finding balance in our mental goals and routines, it can lead to a happier and more productive year.
