Jennings County rescue workers saved a woman having a mental health crisis from the Muscatatuck River Wednesday.

According to the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called to the Muscatatuck County Park at about 11:30 a.m. in the morning on New Year’s Eve on reports of a distressed woman. Although deputies could not initially find the woman, they did find her vehicle. Deputies along with firefighters from North Vernon and Vernon Fire Departments and Rescue 20 medics began searching for the woman. She was discovered about 300 yards from Vinegar Mill and had fallen down a steep drop off into the river.

Deputy John Hartman climbed down to her location and firefighters used a rope to pull her to safety. She was taken by medica to a local hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s department praised the teamwork of all of the Jennings County agencies that took part in the successful rescue.
