ALLEN PARK, Mich. – A man shot by police in Allen Park during a mental health crisis is facing criminal charges.

The shooting happened at about 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, on Southfield Road, near Roger Avenue.

According to authorities, Steven Strickland of Lincoln Park was reportedly threatening to harm himself with a box cutter.

Police from Allen Park and Lincoln Park responded to the scene.

When Strickland allegedly refused officers’ commands to drop the cutter, they first fired a Taser, followed by less-lethal rounds. Police said Strickland approached the officers, one of whom fired shots, hitting Strickland in the arm.

Strickland was hospitalized in critical condition, but he is expected to be OK.

On Wednesday, Jan. 7, Strickland was charged with assault and resisting and obstructing. He was given a $40,000 bond.

Strickland’s probable cause conference is scheduled for Jan. 15.
