Anyone who has lived in big-city California and walked downtowns would cheer Newsom and Care Court on (and I'm not even a fan of Newsom).
Great idea for the mentally ill make you go to court and be forced to take meds, and if you refuse they say your stripped of your rights then forced to take meds. One way or another they are going to try and run your life. No on Newsom for president
You can't possibly have ever lived in a big city & not thought we are not doing enough for those with severe mental health issues & for those with families wanting to help them. Thanks to all who are working on solutions
I do not feel it is about rights. Those who have died at the hands of mental illness their families understand this..We have people thown into rail car tracks subways and assaulted while going about their routine. People without proper care Nutrition medication and proper sleep and adequate housing are not making rational choices because of their illness. People sleeping in alleys subways and streets are nit making rational choices They pose a threat to others around them. They need help people having been giving proper resources clothing food and such it has not changed their status only perpetrated it further. Health issues skin infections and a host if other anti docial issues arise the longer they stay out if touch and only in reach for a pan handle or a days lunch This is not the basic human rights we speak if to make change needed. We had a system in place like this many decades ago to house thise who could not give themselves the adequate basic care they need. Call it conservatorship its blatantly cruel that other's have become fearful due to the population that has killed and assaulted passersby. We can do better but we must maintain a score card if proper evaluation of these people Too many assaults killings and mass shootings have occurred Perhaos we show integrity to the many who are misding their children and ban 1 just 1 assault weapon of choice by a person deemed to have rights but not the rationale to make decisions fir their own safety and others 😢
People forget Ronald Reagan cut funding to mental health.
I saw a homeless man on the shoulder of the 5 freeway, he was throwing or attempting to throw some sort of objects to cars passing by. My granddaughter was with me, it was very scary to say the least.
Mental illness is everyone's problem. Starting with the families of the affected. We absolutely can not put blame or throw the burden on the government. People need to help each other.
MENTAL HEALTH ,NEEDS TO BE PUT BACK INTO LAW , SO THOSE THAT NEED IT WILL GET IT. THEY CAN BE HELPED.
Many homeless in CA come here to live on the street from
Other states where the weather is cold or rainy!
The homeless are often living like this by choice! I worked
In education in downtown LA for years and was able to observe them close enough!
Newsom created a problem, fueled it with words and very little common sense. All while looking good.
The government is never the answer. Gavin, your administration created the crises
What percent of homeless people are mental? It's low. Bring back the poor house with its jobs offerings. Gavin force people to take responsibility for themselves (not the government).
The largest underlying contributor to the massive spike in todays homelessness is yesterdays opiod epidemic fueled by unchecked pharmaceuticals flooding the market with prescription pills. That was my dad's story. Went in for a tooth ache, prescribed oxicodon, got addicted, turned to heroin, then overdosed. If we could go back in time and stop the pharmaceutical's from doing this, homelessness would be in a better place today.
Get out of California!!!
i think its a crime that black mom threw her kid in the streets to b at us. I hope the court orders her to take care of him in her home what will happen little she understands
What has he done with the millions he had to take care of all these people. They’re all still on the street.
I am so sorry this wasn’t in place in 2020 when my daughter died of a drug overdose in California. We were heartbroken trying to get her what she needed and realizing even though she was under my health insurance, we had absolutely no say in her care.
I'm trying to decide if I will watch this on tube. I promised myself I wouldn't watch CBS or Paramout after the way they had their dealings lately to appease Trump and how they've firing Colbert. Ready sad because I've watched Sunday Morning, Face the Nation, 60 minutes all my life. News, Satire, Comedy , our Constitution all need to be free from Political interference and or a tyrannical Trump
Trying some new and bold 🦾 instead of throwing away people’s belongings when they’re already down
This Dope is on Dope.
We need this in CA. I swear the mentally ill come from all over the nation because of our weather. A coworker got punched on the train going to work the other day.
As someone who works in mental health, he’s absolutely right to try this solution. Staying with the “status quo” that obviously doesn’t work is where states fail. Criminalizing mental illness with jail time for camping out in tents without providing a better system of care is truly heinous. This is the norm for many states, and it’s certainly not fixing anything. Good for Newsom for calling out the core issue for a large part of the homeless population.
I’m seeing a lot of nay-sayers here voicing their opinions on this, but providing no other viable solutions. So what is the answer? And what proof do you have for your opinion? Whether you agree or not, he is absolutely right that what has been in place for decades across this entire nation is NOT working. No one here is suggesting that people who have simply fallen on hard times and do not have a severe mental illness should be part of this policy. Anyone who has dealt with severe mental illness in their family knows full well that their family member will reject care, even if it’s offered to them at no cost. Schizophrenic Bipolar disorder for example is characterized specifically by refusing to take medication. So, for all those who think they know all about this without knowing any statistics or data, give us your viable solution that works…
This is plausable. When I first heard the statement made, that of refusal and conservetorship, it frightened me. Then I realized the meaning of of Care Court!
Homeless help!
There’s a shortage of mental health care providers; they should give free tuition to anyone who wants to be one and has grades to get in the programs.
Long overdue.
Medicine for who want medicine. It should never be mandated
I love that idea. My sister was ill.
Accountability?? Consequences?? What is society expecting that the court take "Accountability" and dish out "Consequences "??? That's really what it is….
If this helps just one person with mental health issues, then I'm for it.
Thank you for this @60 minutes
Failed policy. He's going to create another failed policy.
What are your thoughts? On this?
I used to worked in an addiction facility and there were times when a lot of those people weren’t mentally right to make the kind of decisions to save their lives never mind about taking medication consistently. A conservatorship is something is probably better than an institution or living on the streets. I hope he gets this law pass because what’s happening with mental health and homelessness is something that needs to be seriously addressed and sometimes drastic measures have to be taken.
Hey Gavin, put yourself through the system before you market it in 2028.
Then those who are selling it, put yourself through it too. Then, get your court to self admit to the system.
Even Reagan knew this wasn't the answer, you're to the right of him.
"Are you insane?"
Reagan was not wrong.
Star Trek TNG: Frame of Mind.
Apparently it has not worked! 01/26 get real California!
Too bad this was all just a scam and was never used to help anyone
Everything that comes out of this snake's mouth is a lie. Gavin Newsom is a monster. He is one of the most tyrannical, oppressive, debased politicians and human beings the state of California and the U.S. has ever known. Don't care what he says, don't care what face he puts on.
