Hello Eagles,
Welcome back and happy start to the spring semester! I hope everyone is settling into their classes and feeling ready for the weeks ahead.
In the Board meeting held on Jan. 20, the Board reviewed options to expand virtual mental health counseling for students to later hours or weekends, when Transformative Growth is not available. This process was required under a state law that encourages community colleges to provide early and accessible mental health support. Expanding virtual counseling would help ensure students have access to support outside of traditional campus hours.
President Tracy Morris brought attention to the dental hygiene resource, where students, faculty, and staff can get teeth cleanings or certain treatments for little to no cost. This program is a great example of students supporting students while gaining hands-on experience.
Further updates were discussed regarding the new Agriculture building, including the naming of the courtyard, offices, and solar table in recognition of donors. Purchase requests were also approved for the microbiology lab, meaning continued improvements and updated learning spaces across campus.
As for student support services, I want to continue bringing attention to Transformative Growth Counseling. All students receive four free sessions with a licensed clinical therapist, with additional sessions potentially covered by insurance. Students can also access peer mentors, an unlimited resource for mental health support or general college guidance.
During the meeting, President Morris introduced McKinzie Tarbox, the new peer mentor who is fully trained and already meeting with students. Tarbox fills the role previously held by Bhawna Fnu, who has transferred to Iowa State University.
Looking ahead, I encourage students to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas at [email protected]. Your input matters, and I am committed to representing your voices at the Board table.
