Emma Stone is lending some insight into why she does not use Instagram.
Stone, 37, noted that she avoids using the popular social media platform in an interview with Rolling Stone surrounding the Super Bowl commercial she and her Bugonia director Yorgos Lanthimos made for Squarespace. The black-and-white commercial, which will air between the big game’s first and second quarters on Sunday, Feb. 8, features Stone attempting to purchase her own domain name on the internet, which the two-time Oscar winner said she actually did in real life as she worked on the ad.
“One hundred percent no. That’s why I don’t even have Instagram,” Stone said, when the outlet asked if she would turn her newly-acquired domain name into a lifestyle website. “I’m too afraid of my own mental health to be engaged in that way, and that’s why I’m such a lurker and love following other people’s stuff.”
“I don’t know [why] I never actually did that,” she said elsewhere in the interview, regarding why she did not already own her own domain name. “Squarespace kind of had to deal with my lack of foresight. So I’m very grateful they did or else the commercial really would not have worked. It would have been weird if you went to EmmaStone.com and it was… I don’t even know what might have been going on over there.”

Stone, who shares daughter Louise, 4, with husband Dave McCary, also told Rolling Stone that she was “very into building kind of prototypical sites” with old web services like Angelfire and GeoCities when she was growing up.
“I was really into that. I built a presentation for class when I was in elementary school and I remember that I had to bring people to the library to see my presentation,” she said. “I was really proud of my drop-down menus, and you know, all the things that you could do on Angelfire, basically. So I was very into that. I also remember the LiveJournal time, and I was such a blog reader for so long. It was like my favorite thing, and so now I’m truly one of the Substack freaks. I’m spending a lot of money on Substack.”

Stone is nominated at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 15 for Best Actress for her performance in Bugonia and as a producer on the movie, which is up for Best Picture. Bugonia was her fourth feature film collaboration with Greek director Lanthimos.
The actress also shared with Rolling Stone that she reads “a lot of fashion content,” creative writing and “a little bit of the gossipy stuff” on Substack, the subscription-based publishing platform.
