NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -International Children’s Mental Health Week is highlighting the wellbeing of kids across the country, but one North Platte organization says mental health support doesn’t have to wait for a special week.
The West Central District Health Department provides 24/7 confidential support through their credible mind program. Officials say the resource has a significant impact on those involved.
“It’s really important to have access to that because we know that individuals are struggling, whether that’s children or adults, and maybe they don’t know the right place to turn,” said Meghan Travino, Executive Director For West Central District Health Department. “Or maybe there’s a little bit of fear of that stigma that tends to still be associated with mental health and wellbeing. So being able to have a place to go and be able to get those resources on your own time without fear of any associated stigma, it’s just incredibly important to be able to have that as a resource to help support people.” she added.
The health department also received national recognition with a Promising Flourishing award. Travino said the attention means a lot to the organization.
“We have an amazing team here at the Health Department who all truly care about the health and wellbeing of those that are in our community,” the official said. “So being able to win this award was just one of those ways to be able to show our community that we are committed to helping provide resources and being able to support everyone in their mental health journey,” she said.
The department has a message for those who are struggling.
“Being able to talk about mental health and wellbeing is a really crucial key in being able to help reduce the stigma around mental health,” the official said. “For those that are out there that are currently struggling, something that’s important to know is you are not alone. There are people that are here for you, that are supporting you, and want to be able to provide those resources to be able to help you be able to flourish in our community.”
WCDHD remind parents that reaching out for support is a sign of strength if their child is struggling or if they’re concerned about their mental health.
