GIRARD, Kan. — A program in Southeast Kansas is helping first responders tackle difficult topics and break down barriers.

The Crawford County Mental Health Center held a full day of training today for firefighters and EMS personnel. It is geared toward giving them a better understanding of mental health episodes like panic attacks and PTSD, and identifying self-destructive behaviors.

Center staff say the training is designed to increase mental health literacy and promote a culture of support.

“They have tough jobs, and it’s just hard enough as it is. But when we can learn how to open up and have the conversation so we can say, I see you and help our partners and, you know, brothers and sisters be well. It just it just empowers them to have a healthier work environment,” said Shelly Kelley, SEK Mental Health Center First Aid Project Director.

The training is nationally recognized. Crawford County has been offering it for two years.
