WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) – Williston area residents are getting back a behavioral health unit that has been shut down for 15 years.
CHI St. Alexius Hospital is bringing it back. A newly constructed wing will replace one that is currently being used for storage. Demolition of the old wing is currently underway, and Williston Representative David Richter was the first person to swing a hammer.
Interim President Lorrie Antos said it will have nine inpatient beds, which will be the only ones in the region.
It’s a $7 million project. Half of the money will come from grants from the state and Williams County.
“It’s a group effort, a community effort, which is what makes Williston a strong community,” said Rep. David Richter, R-Williston.
Antos said behavioral healthcare services are greatly needed in this part of the state.
“It’s very important in this region, but any city, town or state you go to, behavioral health is an underserved population. It’s something that we are really trying to make a focus on,” said Antos.
Antos said the wing should be ready to go by the end of the year.
