UPPER MICHIGAN. (WLUC) – Some health experts are raising awareness of the emotional impact of eating disorders.

They say having an eating disorder can strain relationships with friends and family.

Eating disorders often intersect with other mental health struggles like depression or anxiety, which can further isolate people struggling with these disorders.

Aspirus Health Behavioral Health Director Jessica Schiek says recovery is possible.

“It can be one of the more challenging things to treat, but recovery is absolutely possible, and just like most things, relapse is part of recovery,” Schiek said. “And so having a plan on how you’re going to navigate that together is important, but there’s hope and recovery is possible.”

If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder, call the national eating disorder hotline at (866) 903-3787.
