KUTV — In times of emotional distress, mental health struggles, or substance use challenges, help is just a call or text away.
988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, provides confidential, accessible support for anyone — not just those experiencing suicidal thoughts. HIPAA privacy laws protect all personal information, ensuring conversations remain completely private.
Amanda Mcnab spoke to Fresh Living’s David Osmond about how 988 can help those in need.
Advanced Crisis Services
988 offers Mobile Crisis Outreach Teams (MCOT) statewide, bringing trained mental health professionals directly to homes, schools, or workplaces. These teams provide face-to-face support, safety planning, and connections to local resources, ensuring help is available wherever it’s needed.
Language and Cultural Accessibility
988 services are available in multiple languages, including Spanish, with interpretation offered in 135 languages. Spanish-speaking callers can press 2 to connect directly with bilingual crisis workers, and text or chat options are available to provide culturally sensitive support.
Support Beyond Suicide
988 is for anyone experiencing emotional or mental health struggles, including anxiety, depression, or life stressors. It also serves those helping loved ones, offering guidance on how to check in and provide support.
Even if you’re not in immediate crisis, calling or texting 988 can help with early intervention, resource connections, and sorting through overwhelming feelings.
Serving Rural Communities
For those in rural areas with limited access to therapists or clinics, 988 is a vital lifeline. The service offers phone stabilization, connects callers to MCOT for in-person support, and helps identify local or telehealth resources — reducing the barriers to care.
Breaking Down Stigma
By normalizing conversations around mental health and providing judgment-free access, 988 encourages help-seeking as a sign of strength. Awareness campaigns, school programs, and community partnerships help ensure 988 is trusted and well-known across Utah.
Remember: 988 is safe, confidential, and available 24/7. Crisis workers will only call 911 if someone is in immediate danger, making it a supportive first step toward care.
Call or text 988 if you need help.
