SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) – More than 350 people are expected to attend the second annual “Stand Up Let’s Talk” event on Thursday, Feb. 26, hosted by the Siouxland Mental Health Center at the Marriott Riverfront in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
A happy hour precedes the main program, with conversations about mental health beginning at 6:30 p.m. Those discussions will focus on the stigma surrounding mental health, ways to increase awareness of mental health challenges, and resources available for those struggling.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Rory McKenna You Matter Fund, which helps address financial barriers families face when seeking mental health care.
Morgan Haskell, marketing and fund development director for the Siouxland Mental Health Center, said the fund carries personal significance for the organization’s leadership.
“The Rory McKenna Fund is named after Rory McKenna — his brother is actually our president, Dr. Ryan McKenna. He’s a dentist here in Siouxland, and his brother tragically took his own life several years ago,” Haskell said. “So in order to honor his brother and the work that Dr. McKenna has done within our community for mental health, we thought to honor his brother with this”, said Morgan Haskell with Siouxland Mental Health Center.
This year’s fundraising goal is $80,000, which organizers said should extend needed resources to more than 200 children across Siouxland. Organizers are already planning for next year’s event.
