Grassley warns farm bankruptcies could take toll on farmers’ mental health

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley says he’s monitoring the number of farm bankruptcies occurring across the country.

“I think the number of bankruptcies are up over the long-term, but still way short of what we had in previous farm crisis.”

During his weekly ag press call, the Iowa Republican said more mental health resources are needed for farmers.

“I’m more worried about the impact it has on suicides among family farmers.”

Grassley says the administration could take steps to help address the farm bankruptcy issue.

“The best thing the president can do is get more markets overseas, particularly with China and with soybeans. And then get the input costs down by taking tariffs off.”

A recent report from the American Farm Bureau Federation showed a 46 percent increase in Chapter 12 bankruptcies from 2024.
