The Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) joins communities across the state in recognizing Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) Awareness Month this March, a time dedicated to promoting inclusion, raising awareness and celebrating the contributions of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
More than 41,000 Mississippians live with intellectual or developmental disabilities, highlighting the importance of continued support and access to services that help individuals live meaningful lives in their communities. DMH operates six regional IDD programs across Mississippi, providing residential and community-based care that promote independence and quality of life. As part of IDD Awareness Month, DMH encourages participation in the upcoming IDD Day at the Capitol, which provides opportunities for advocates and providers to engage with lawmakers and raises awareness about the importance of behavioral health services across Mississippi.
Everyone is welcome to join DMH and others on Tuesday, March 3, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the first-floor rotunda as we gather with service providers, clients and more to reaffirm Mississippi’s commitment to community support and expanding access to services.
“This event highlights the importance of ensuring individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have access to the supports they need to live full and meaningful lives,” said Wendy Bailey, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. “IDD Awareness Month and Days at the Capitol provide an opportunity to celebrate individuals and families while reinforcing our commitment to strengthening community-based services across Mississippi.”
Our agency encourages Mississippians to learn more about intellectual and developmental disabilities, support inclusive practices, and recognize the contributions of individuals with IDD throughout March and beyond.
