TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) – Hundreds gathered at Horny Toad Harley Davidson on Saturday for the third annual “Revving for Riley” event, connecting families with local mental health organizations while honoring a young man lost to suicide.

Justin and Tracy Capel organized the event in memory of their son Riley, who died by suicide on Sept. 25, 2023. March 2 would have been Riley’s 20th birthday.

“We are here to help in the fight against suicide prevention,” Justin Capel said. “Ever since then, we wanted to help out the community… there are way too many people deciding to take that path. So Revving for Riley was born.”, said Justin Capel.

Tracy Capel said Riley loved cars and people.

“Riley was a giver. He would give the shirt off his back to one of his friends that were cold… or our leftovers if his friend didn’t have dinner that night,” Tracy Capel said. “He was just a compassionate kid… and he loved to go fast. Hence… Revving for Riley.”

What began as a car show has grown into a network linking families with local mental health organizations. Attendees gathered despite rain.

“We’re truly humbled to see the community come support us and our cause,” Justin and Tracy Capel said. “It’s not always bright and sunny every day… and folks need to understand that that’s okay. If we can help with that… with our community partners here… that’s what today is about.”

The Capels said their message to anyone struggling is direct: reach out and use available resources, including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

“Definitely, if you need something, reach out. Don’t be quiet. 9-8-8 is always there for you… they want to help,” Justin Capel said.

The Capels said they plan to continue the event in future years.
