Hormones regulate multiple functions; from metabolism, to moods, reproductive health and more. The hard truth is that disorders related to hormonal imbalances, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), thyroid problems, and other hormonal imbalances, are rising globally. While hormonal imbalances are related to reproductive health, hormonal imbalance is not just restricted to reproductive health but also extends to mental health and overall quality of life. This again shows how important it is to diagnose hormonal imbalances in a timely manner. One of the biggest impacts of abnormal hormone levels can be seen in the way they affect reproduction. PCOS is among the biggest reasons for infertility. It impacts normal ovulation in women, imbalance of reproductive hormones, which in turn causes abnormal menstrual cycles or failure to ovulate altogether. Women suffering from PCOS often have difficulty conceiving since their ovaries do not ovulate regularly. Simlarly, women battling thyroid disorders often have difficulty conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term.Apart from fertility, hormonal disorders can greatly affect mental health, as hormones have a strong correlation to brain chemistry and emotional well-being. Multiple studies say, women who experience hormonal disorders like PCOS have a higher chance of experiencing anxiety, despair, and mood fluctuations. The aforementioned barriers can be attributed to both biological factors and the visual manifestations of hormonal imbalances. For instance, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth, and hair thinning are manifestations of hormonal imbalances, and they can greatly impact one’s mental well-being, especially when combined with the pressure of fertility and menstrual disorders. In addition, hormonal problems can affect a person’s life in unexpected ways, and this is because a number of people are living with chronic fatigue, weight management problems, irregular sleeping patterns, and metabolic problems such as insulin resistance, among other complications. This can, in turn, cause a number of health problems in the future, such as diabetes and heart problems. Other than the health complications, the unpredictable nature of hormonal problems, such as hormonal imbalance, can make it difficult to maintain a regular pattern, and this is likely to affect a person’s job, relationships, and general satisfaction with life, and this is the reason why a number of women living with hormonal abnormalities are likely to have a lower quality of life than those without the disorder.Despite the wide impact of hormonal abnormalities, it is not uncommon for such conditions to remain untreated for long periods of time because the initial signs may not be significant enough to prompt immediate attention, as the symptoms may be viewed as common occurrences of lifestyle changes. Such hormonal imbalances as irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, lethargy, and weight gain may not be taken seriously until the condition starts to affect fertility.Hormonal imbalances diagnosed at early stages can assist in the management of the condition before it starts to manifest into significant problems. Individuals can make the necessary lifestyle adjustments to manage the condition, as well as seek medical care when necessary, to effectively manage the symptoms of hormonal imbalances. Furthermore, the mental health aspects of hormonal imbalances can be effectively managed.Hormonal abnormalities are common in the lives of many individuals, but the impact of the condition does not have to be overwhelming. The management of the condition can be effectively achieved through the development of awareness, screening, and seeking medical care at early stages before the condition starts to manifest into significant problems in fertility, mental health, and overall well-being.(This is an authored article by Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar, President Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction (ISAR) and Immediate Past President – Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) Director Solo Clinic IVF & ObGyn, Pune)
